An Tale of Unexpected Kindness: The Time a University Student Let Me Stay on Her Dorm Ground
During 2006, I traveled to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I figured to arrange accommodation after getting there, yet upon reaching the city, a major event was in town and all the budget hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but quickly found that airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open 24 hours. With no idea quite what to do and feeling increasingly desperate, I caught a bus into town and began walking towards a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the evening in an establishment that was open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the ideal condition for acing a crucial interview the next day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.
Our society requires more folks like that woman.
It seems I seemed confused because a woman spotted me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked if I was OK. I shared my predicament and without hesitation she said I could sleep on the floor in her student dorm at ANU – which was perfect, as that’s where my medical school interview was the following day. She even offered a meal: one sandwiches she had from her work shift. I had access to the bathroom and a protected spot to rest to spend the night.
In retrospect, I now understand the enormous leap of faith she undertook as a woman letting a male stranger she’d just met crash at her place. In those days I existed within a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious to such safety concerns. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – and remain very grateful.
I didn’t end up study at ANU, and I never saw her again, but her act remains etched in my mind that incredible gesture of generosity. My sincere desire is that life has rewarded her generosity many times over. Our society requires more individuals who show such kindness.
