Police stated they were contacted by a individual who found a vehicle in Hanau covered with reddish substance

Approximately 50 vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Police report they were contacted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Police then found numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.

These symbols are banned in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Police report early analysis show the substance was likely human bodily fluid.

"At present there remains no indication as to where it came from; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they added.

City officials stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the public for tips.

A senior political figure stated the incident left him without words and required to be resolved quickly.

"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
