International Committee of the Red Cross Assists Hamas in Search for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official stated that its personnel joined Hamas officials into zones of Gaza still under Israeli military authority to facilitate the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Under the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on 10 October, the group is required to return the remains of all Israeli hostages promptly. In exchange, the Israeli government has consented to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for each Israeli.

She added: “Those involved to the conflict established the procedures of the mission and entrusted the ICRC to act as a impartial mediator. The ICRC was had no part in the discussions.”

The official further explained: “Our team was not involved in the search for the deceased nor does it take part in the retrieval of human remains.”
