The acclaimed crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.

Their work "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case so far."

New Character and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to become a sexual predator.

Yet, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.
