The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated series by the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several agonizing personal histories for characters including Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the opening appears stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.

This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer the talented musician. It's a track originating from the official score of the same name, the second release released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.

Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
