Together Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The narrative starts when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the cliches cease. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
